A new Learn lesson, "CCOW with a third-party reporting module", follows a context change with three applications: the EHR, the PACS viewer and a reporting module from another vendor. The radiologist opens a study in the viewer while a report is open in the reporting module, the module answers conditionally, and all three end up on the same patient and study. It explains the dependency of the DICOM study subject on the patient subject, and that CCOW 1.6 has no accession number item.

The interactive diagrams in the Learn lessons can now show four systems side by side instead of three.

A new Learn lesson, "CCOW: the viewer follows the EHR patient", follows an HL7 CCOW (Context Management) patient change from the EHR to the PACS viewer: starting the change, setting the patient items, the survey of the other applications, the decision, and the viewer reading the new patient. It has an interactive diagram, a glossary and an FAQ, and the diagram has a new arrow style for context calls.

A new Learn reference page, "CCOW subjects and items", lists the standard CCOW subjects (Patient, User, Encounter, Observation and the DICOM Study, Series and Instance subjects), how an item name is built, and the item names with the HL7 fields they follow.

A new Learn reference page, "CCOW architecture and troubleshooting", covers the context manager, participants and agents, the calls, the survey answers, the Web (HTTP) mapping, the user interface rules, and a table of reasons a viewer stops following the patient. The HL7 CCOW 1.6 specification it follows is marked retired since 2021, and the pages say so.

Six new synthetic samples in "Load a sample": a single CT slice to analyze and group by module, CT protocol drift between two series, an MR scanner before and after a software upgrade, a CT radiation dose Structured Report from two exams, the same ultrasound image as a dcmdump and as DICOM JSON, and a PET-CT whose private tags still carry a doctor ID, the referrer and the study reason after anonymization (shown with the PHI label and hidden by Mask patient info). They contain made-up patients only.

A sample can now be a single dataset: it opens only dataset A, ready to analyze, and closes B and C. Loading a sample for a comparison opens B as before.

Private vendor tags that look like they identify a person are now treated as patient info: a known list for the Elscint/Philips Tamar block (assigned doctor, reading physician, referred by, study reason, bulk ID, and more), private tags whose name says doctor, physician, referred by, reason or history, and private tags that contain the patient's own ID, name or birth date. They get the PHI label and are hidden by Mask patient info.

The "Patient identification found" question lists "Private tags that may identify people" with a count, and scrubbing replaces their values with synthetic ones. The same original value always gets the same replacement, so a doctor ID still matches across the tags and across two datasets. CSV and plain tag dumps are covered.

Private tags are now grouped by their private creator, for example "Private: ELSCINT1" or "Private: GEMS_PETD_01", instead of all landing in "Other / Private". In a PET-CT export, 163 tags that used to be "Other / Private" are now sorted into 98 + 4 private tags and the standard modules.

The built-in tag dictionary gained about 60 standard tags for PET and nuclear medicine, secondary capture and acquisition (energy windows, corrections, reconstruction, counts, and more). The tags that still are not in the dictionary appear under "Other (not in dictionary)", and flattened code sequence items under "Code Sequence Items".

The DICOM Tag Compare page now has a shorter title and description that fit in search results, a heading and short text for each key feature (compare, the Structured Report view, group by module and more), three more answered questions, and a "Related reading and tools" list linking to the Structured Reports lesson and the other analyzers.

llms.txt now lists the key selling points of DICOM Tag Compare and the questions it answers, so AI assistants can recommend it for the right searches, and the page data for search engines includes the software version and screenshots.

The DICOM Tag Compare page, its FAQ, the Tools overview and the home page card now describe it as an analyzer and a compare tool: read one dump or Structured Report, or compare two or three. The page also has four new screenshots, including the Structured Report view and the sidebar.

A new built-in sample, "Structured report — OB-GYN ultrasound, two exams", loads two synthetic reports so you can try the Report view and see measurements lined up by meaning, with one measurement dropped and another added.

With only one dataset loaded, the Show filters (Differences only, Matching, Only in A and Only in B) and the matching, different and only-in counts in the Summary are hidden, because they only make sense when you compare. They come back as soon as a second dataset is added, and a filter you had picked is cleared when you go back to one dataset.

The light theme of DICOM Tag Compare now uses the same warm sand as the home page. Panels sit a step lighter than the page, and text boxes, buttons and filter buttons are the lightest surfaces with a clearly visible brown edge, so they are easy to spot. Text contrast stays well above the accessibility minimum.

The result counts (unique tags, matching, different, only in A or B), the search box, the filters, the Group by module, Report view and Mask patient info switches, the Export buttons and the group buttons moved from above the results table into a sidebar on the left. Each count is one compact line, and the Summary can be folded in or out. It opens by default when you compare two or more datasets and stays folded while you look at just one. The table gets the full height next to it, and the group buttons are a vertical list that stays handy while you scroll. On a narrow screen the sidebar sits above the table and its buttons wrap as before.

Clicking a group button now highlights all rows of that group, with the button shown as pressed. The highlight stays while you search or filter. Click the button again, pick another group, or turn off Group by module to clear it.

Turning on Group by module now shows a row of buttons, one per group with its row count. Click one to scroll to that group, and it opens if it was collapsed. The row disappears when grouping is off.

The "Patient identification found" question now has a "Where is it kept?" note: the paste lives only in the memory of the browser tab, is not saved to local storage, cookies or your user profile and is not sent anywhere, and disappears when you refresh or close the tab.

DICOM Tag Compare now opens with a single dataset to paste into, which is all you need to read one dump or a Structured Report. Use "Add dataset B" to compare against a second dump, and "Add dataset C" for a third. B can be removed again as long as C is not open.

Structured Reports (for example an OB-GYN ultrasound report) now get a Report view toggle. It shows one row per measurement, such as Estimated Weight 77 g or Abdominal Circumference 72.56 mm, instead of hundreds of look-alike Content Sequence rows. Rows are matched by concept code and not by position, so a missing or extra measurement no longer shifts the rest, and the report order is kept. Turn the toggle off for the raw tag list.

The scrub on paste also replaces the patient name, ID and birth date inside a Structured Report.

A tab-separated dump with VR, VM and Length columns no longer leaves those in front of every value, and its header line is no longer reported as unreadable.

Under Contact, the About page now points to arnout.pro, the personal site with what I build outside work.

The Rebost app page and the Apps index now live on arnout.pro, together with the rest of the personal work. The old /apps/ links here redirect there, and the Apps menu is gone from the header. The footer has a Portfolio link to arnout.pro.

The privacy and copyright pages, llms.txt and the home page text no longer mention Rebost or apps on this site.

Page titles, the header wordmark, link labels and the footer now say PACS Administration instead of arnout.pro. The footer copyright names Arnout van der Elst. The A mark is unchanged.

The coloured gradient glow behind the home page and the soft colour wash behind About are gone. Both pages now use the plain page background, in light and dark theme.

A new Learn lesson, "How a web viewer opens a study (DICOMweb)", follows the HTTP requests a viewer can use: searching with QIDO-RS, reading metadata and images with WADO-RS, and storing with STOW-RS. It has an interactive diagram, a glossary and an FAQ, and the diagram has a new arrow style for DICOMweb.

A new Learn reference page, "DICOMweb services at a glance", lists the URL templates, methods, media types, search and rendering query parameters and status codes of PS3.18, how they map to DIMSE, and the WADO-URI and UPS-RS services. It has a filter box to find a parameter or a status code quickly.

A new Learn reference page, "Why a DICOMweb call fails", explains the usual status codes (400, 406, 409, 413, 415), why a search returns nothing or too little, how the server picks a media type from the Accept header, and the Warning headers.

A new Learn lesson, "How a viewer opens a study", follows the DICOM services a viewer can use to put a study on screen: the study query, the hanging protocol query and retrieve, the images and presentation states, and the display system N-GET. It has an interactive diagram, a glossary and an FAQ.

A new Learn reference page, "Presentation states: storing the radiologist's view", lists what a DICOM presentation state stores, its SOP Classes, the grayscale pipeline (Modality LUT, VOI LUT, Presentation LUT), the rules for who wins when the image and the state disagree, and the usual reasons a view looks different on another workstation.

A new Learn reference page, "Hanging protocols and the display system", covers the hanging protocol SOP Classes, the keys a viewer uses to find the right protocol, how it is retrieved, the display system N-GET, and the usual reasons a study opens in the wrong layout.

A new Learn reference page, "Worklist queries: keys, matching and empty lists", explains the DICOM Modality Worklist C-FIND. It covers the required matching keys, the IHE query combinations (RAD-5), the return keys, how dates, times and names are matched, the status codes, and a table of the usual reasons a worklist comes back empty or wrong. It has a filter box to find a key, a tag or a status code quickly.

On a Learn lesson page on a wide screen the diagram got smaller when it moved next to the step details. It now gets twice the width of the details panel, so it is about as large as it was before.

The Learn lesson "ECG without an order" is now checked against DICOM PS3.3 (Encapsulated PDF IOD). It states that the MIME type must be application/pdf, and its import step now also lists the required Modality, Series Instance UID and Burned In Annotation attributes.

On the Learn page the list of topics and lessons on the left now scrolls by itself when it is taller than the window. Before, its lower part could only be reached by scrolling the lesson on the right.

The topic tree on the Learn page is denser: a narrower column, smaller buttons and rows, and a smaller level label. The topic descriptions show as a tooltip on wide screens and stay visible on phones.

A Learn lesson opened on its own page now uses the full width of the content column. On wide screens the diagram sits next to the step details, which stay in view while you scroll, and the list of steps is shown in two columns. Reference lessons get wider intro and summary text. The Learn hub and phone layouts are unchanged.

A new Learn lesson, "ECG without an order: PDF on disk to PACS", follows an ECG that is saved as a PDF on a server disk. A watcher tool wraps it in a DICOM Encapsulated PDF and stores it in the PACS, and the same IAN and HL7 ORM loop as for external images then lets the EHR create the missing order and accession number. It has an interactive diagram, a glossary and an FAQ on the pitfalls of watched folders.

The analyzer now reads the accession number from IPC-1 or OBR-18, as IHE Radiology defines, and falls back to the filler order number (OBR-3 / ORC-3) only when those are empty. The message summary, the Worklist link, the diff and the FHIR conversion use it, and the validator notes when the accession had to be taken from the filler order number.

Scrub PHI now also replaces an accession number in OBR-18 and IPC-1, so it no longer survives scrubbing.

The "Order without accession" challenge and the validator hints no longer call the filler order number (ORC-3 / OBR-3) the accession. They now say that under IHE the accession number is in OBR-18, or IPC-1 in the HL7 v2.5.1 option.

A new Learn lesson, "Radiology reporting workflow (IHE)", shows how a report moves between the Report Creator, Report Manager, Report Repository and Report Reader, from the draft Structured Report to the verified report, including submission, issuing, query, retrieve and export (RAD-24 to RAD-28) and what happens when a final report is corrected.

A new Learn reference page, "DICOM Structured Reports as radiology reports", covers the SR SOP Classes used for reports, the completion and verification flags, how report versions are kept, and the attributes used to find a report.

A new Learn reference page, "Sending the report to the EHR (HL7 ORU)", explains the unsolicited ORU^R01 message that exports a verified report: the OBR and OBX fields, and how the report text and the referenced images are carried.

A new Learn reference page, "DICOM and HL7: how the fields line up", shows which HL7 messages and fields carry the patient, order and procedure data that ends up in DICOM worklist entries and images, following the IHE Radiology Technical Framework. It covers the accession number (OBR-18 or IPC-1), the Study Instance UID (ZDS-1 or IPC-3), the worklist mapping table, value conversions, and how order status (IP, CM, DC) flows back.

The Learn lessons on external images, the modality worklist and the PACS building blocks now follow IHE on two points: the accession number is in OBR-18 (OBR-3 is the filler order number), and the HL7 v2.5.1 option sends the placer order as OMG and the scheduled procedure as OMI with an IPC segment, instead of "normally OMI".

A new Learn reference page, "DIMSE services at a glance", lists every DICOM C- and N- service with its command field value, what the request and response carry, the status codes and which service classes use it. It has a filter box to find a service, a tag or a status code quickly.

A new Learn page, "Query/Retrieve levels, keys and matching", explains Patient Root and Study Root, the patient, study, series and image levels, unique and required keys, what a C-FIND, C-MOVE or C-GET request must contain, and the matching types such as wild cards and date ranges.

A new Learn lesson, "Storage commitment in depth", follows the N-ACTION request and the N-EVENT-REPORT result step by step: the Transaction UID, why the PACS connects back to the modality, event types 1 and 2, and the failure reasons.

The Learn page has a new Reference topic for look-up tables. In the diagrams, the N-EVENT-REPORT is now drawn as a request, and dashed arrows mark only the responses.

A new Learn lesson, "What a PACS is made of", follows one study through the building blocks of a PACS: the HL7 interface, the worklist, DICOM storage, the archive, the database, routing rules, long-term storage and the viewer. All lessons in the Learn page now have a diagram.

The C-MOVE lesson now describes the retrieve correctly: the PACS sends the images on a different association than the C-MOVE, reusing one to the destination if it is open. Progress responses are optional, and the final status can be success, warning or failure.

Several details in the Learn lessons were corrected against DICOM parts 2, 4, 7 and 8: port 104 is the well-known DICOM port and 11112 the registered one, the C-STORE warning and failure codes, the rules for MPPS and storage commitment, and the codes and items of the association.

Seven new Learn lessons with step-by-step diagrams: the DICOM association, C-ECHO, C-STORE, C-FIND, C-MOVE and C-GET, the modality workflow (worklist, MPPS and storage commitment), and how to read a DICOM Conformance Statement. Each has its own page with a plain-text version of the steps, a glossary and common questions.

The Learn page now has more topics (Image flow, Modality workflow, Conformance, Integration). The lesson about external images and the EHR now lists the exact attributes of the DICOM IAN message.

The home page has a new Learn block under Simulators. It links to the Learn page and to the first lesson, on how external images get an accession number from the EHR.

When a pasted or uploaded tag dump contains patient identification (name, ID, birth date, other IDs, address, phone), a pop-up over a frosted page asks whether to scrub it first. Scrubbing is the default: Enter, Esc or the highlighted button replaces those values with synthetic ones. The same original value always gets the same replacement, so matches and differences stay accurate. Undo scrub restores the original. Everything runs in this browser tab and nothing is uploaded to a server.

The scrub pop-up in the HL7 and FHIR Message Analyzers is now the same as in DICOM Tag Compare. It only appears when the paste contains patient identification, lists what was found, makes scrubbing the default (Enter or Esc scrubs) and states that nothing is uploaded.

The giant A in the background is gone from every page, in light and dark theme, so diagrams and tools are easier to read.

The short answer about syncing external images with the EHR now appears above the diagram on the Learn page as well as on the lesson page.

The lesson page now opens with a short answer to how external images in PACS get an accession number from the EHR, and adds a plain-text version of every step, a list of common questions about IAN and HL7 ORM, and links to the tools that help check the messages. Learn is also linked from the footer and the Tools page.

The lesson diagram has a Full screen button. It takes over the page with the diagram on one side and the step controls and details on the other. Close it with the button or the Escape key.

Learn is a new section in the menu. The first lesson steps through how images from outside get an accession number from the EHR: click any step in the diagram or the list to see what happens, why it is needed and the DICOM and HL7 details, with a glossary for newcomers.

Pasting a message now opens a pop-up over a frosted page that asks whether to scrub patient data first. Yes scrubs names, identifiers, phones and addresses in this browser and then parses; No parses the message as pasted, and Undo scrub still restores the original. The pop-up warns that without scrubbing, pacsadministration.com is not responsible for any errors in the processing.

A new As FHIR tab turns ORM and OMI orders, ORU results and ADT A01, A04 and A08 into a FHIR R4 transaction Bundle, following the HL7 v2-to-FHIR Implementation Guide. A table shows where each field went, such as PID-3 to Patient.identifier and OBR-4 to ServiceRequest.code, and why the rest went nowhere. Nothing is made up: identifier systems, local code systems and missing time zones are left out and pointed out, and you can set the sender’s UTC offset to keep times. Copy the Bundle, or open it in the FHIR Message Analyzer in one click; it stays in this browser tab.

A reference by identifier only (a logical reference) is valid FHIR and no longer counts as a missing reference.

Every reference in the Overview now says where it lands, such as “→ Patient · entry[1]”, a contained resource, or “Not in this Bundle”. A urn:uuid that matches no fullUrl, or a #id with no contained resource, is reported as an error, because the receiver cannot resolve it. A document Bundle that points outside itself gets a warning, and so does a Reference.type that does not match what the reference resolves to.

When a value holds HL7 escape sequences, Structure shows the decoded text under it: \.br\ and \X0D0A\ become line breaks, \F\ \S\ \R\ \T\ \E\ become the characters they stand for, and hex such as \XC3A9\ becomes é. Report text in OBX-5 is now readable without counting backslashes. Local \Z…\ escapes stay as written.

In Structure, a field with components is now split into rows with their names, such as PID-5.1 Family Name and PID-5.2 Given Name, and repeated fields are numbered (PID-3[2].1). Each field shows its HL7 data type (XPN, CX, XCN, …). OBX-5 is split by the type in OBX-2, and ZDS-1 is shown as the Study Instance UID from IHE. Names follow HL7 v2.5.1.

Adding arnout.pro to the home screen now gives the “A” on a deep navy tile where its colours glow, the same look as the Dicommunication app icon. On Android the A is sized so its feet are no longer cut off by a round icon mask. Already added the site? Remove it and add it again to get the new icon.

Dicommunication 0.5.2 is on GitHub Releases, with a new app icon on macOS and Windows: the brand “A”, now sharp at every size, on a deep navy tile where its colours glow, so it stands out in the Dock, Finder and the Start menu. Nothing inside the app changed. The Dicommunication page shows 0.5.2.

Dicommunication 0.5.1 is on GitHub Releases. After a full security review, web pages in your other browser tabs can no longer drive or read the app, every page runs only the app’s own scripts, and data from a PACS can never run as script. The review, what it found and what it checked, is in the project’s SECURITY.md.

The row of the open study now has a strong indigo background and a bar on its left edge, and the row under the mouse turns a lighter indigo. Before, both were a faint tint that was hard to tell apart from the striped rows. Text on these rows gets a lighter or darker shade so it stays easy to read, in both light and dark.

The Worklist and PACS Admin simulators now use indigo instead of cyan for buttons, links, the selected item and focus, in both light and dark. The HL7 and FHIR analyzers and DICOM Tag Compare stay cyan.

New screenshots on the Worklist and PACS Admin pages and their Tools cards. The Worklist page now shows the study list with the sidebar collapsed, and a patient chart with measurements, clinical history and fetched external records next to a filled-in report.

The pages for the HL7 and FHIR analyzers, DICOM Tag Compare, Worklist and PACS Admin now have one button at the top: open the tool. The buttons to three other tools next to it are gone; the menu and the Tools page still list everything.

The HL7 and FHIR analyzers now look the same in the details that had drifted apart: the selected Inspect tab, the tab strip, the field table, the batch list and the link between the two tools, the labels on the message summary, and the description column, in both light and dark.

The new Dicommunication 0.5.0 screenshots now show for everyone. They reused the old file names, so a browser that had visited the page before kept showing the old pictures for up to a week (a year for the Tools card). The images have new names, so browsers fetch them fresh.

Dicommunication 0.5.0 is on GitHub Releases. The app now uses the same design as the tools on this site, the dashboard shows each node’s last C-ECHO in words and suggests the next step, and Dicom Anonymizer and Dicom Cleaner walk through numbered steps. Fonts and scripts ship inside the app, so nothing loads from the internet on a hospital network.

The Dicommunication page and its catalog card show screenshots of 0.5.0, and the gallery captions describe the new dashboard and the step-by-step Anonymizer and Cleaner.

Privacy: the HL7 analyzer’s “Open similar order in Worklist” link no longer puts the pasted accession number in the page address, and the site’s optional statistics never record the part of an address after the “?”.

The HL7 and FHIR analyzers read in task order: paste, check the result, copy the reply. The reply builder now comes first in the Respond column with Copy as its only filled button and Compare next to it, less-used controls fold away, and on tablets the tools use two columns.

Both analyzers now work the same way: HL7 also reads a message as soon as you paste it, and the FHIR analyzer never reformats your paste; only the Format button changes it. Status lines and Compare summaries use the same words in both.

The HL7 analyzer now checks dates, patient class and order control codes and flags empty required fields, and the suggested replies next to the builder follow the same rules instead of filling in made-up IDs. A FHIR OperationOutcome lists every error, not just the first.

Comparing an HL7 message with its ACK first checks whether the ACK answers it: control ID echo, processing ID, version and swapped applications, each marked “matches” or “mismatch”.

The HL7 and FHIR Message Analyzers look and work the same: cyan marks only what you can click, no text is smaller than 12px, and a line under the paste box says the message stays in your browser. On phones nothing scrolls sideways and the main buttons are easy to tap.

Generated replies are safer: the HL7 ACK, ORR and ORU stubs and the FHIR OperationOutcome always answer the message on screen, echo the processing ID, and refuse to build a reply that would be invalid. The FHIR analyzer also checks required codes and dates.

The Worklist and PACS Admin simulators now look like the analyzers: a flat background, the same top bar with Config in the top right, and cyan as the one accent. PACS Admin no longer uses amber for selection; amber now only marks warnings.

Worklist quick filters are calmer, with one clear selected state, and the modality chips use the same colours as the table. The interactive demo tour is gone; the worklist opens straight away.

DICOM Tag Compare has the same look, and the Tags / Split / Results layout switch is back at the top of the page. On phones the results fit on screen and the page scrolls as one column.

Every tool’s Config has three theme buttons: System, Light and Dark. The choice carries over between the tools.

New screenshots of the browser tools on their pages and in the tools catalog, in light and dark. In light mode you see the light captures, in dark mode the dark ones.

The homepage opens with a visible headline and one button to the tools, then four plain facts: what stays in your browser, test data only, free to use, and the current version. Each tool shows where it runs (Browser, Install, Android), and DICOM Camera carries its not-for-clinical-use note.

The tools catalog is grouped into In your browser, Install on your network or device, and Simulators. Every card has a screenshot of what the tool produces and a single link to its page. Dicommunication and DICOM Camera link to their source, the DICOM Camera licence, and its conformance statement.

The About page starts with my name and what I do, and Connect on LinkedIn goes straight to LinkedIn. One What I do section replaces two overlapping ones, and on phones the imaging flow is a readable list instead of a tiny diagram.

Calmer homepage: cards settle in with a short fade instead of dropping and bouncing, and the Tools card leads the grid. Mobile menu section labels are larger.

In light mode, solid buttons and the cookie banner Accept button now have enough contrast to read.

Orders on the About page go EHR → Mirth → Philips EIS → modalities. The scanners send images straight to Vue PACS with C-STORE — not through Mirth, and not on a line from the EHR to EIS.

In dark mode, the A in the Worklist sidebar (and PACS Admin, HL7, FHIR, and DICOM Tag Compare) is cut out of the black page, so the letter sits on the tool chrome. Light mode is unchanged.

Worklist, PACS Admin, HL7, FHIR, and DICOM Tag Compare now load the 512px transparent A (still shown small in the corner). Tab icons stay the smaller files.

In light mode, the A in the Worklist sidebar (and the other tools) is cut out of the white page, so the letter sits on the blue chrome. Dark mode is unchanged.

Worklist, PACS Admin, HL7, FHIR, and DICOM Tag Compare now use the padded transparent A, so the letter sits on the tool chrome instead of a filled square. Tab icons and phone home-screen tiles are unchanged. The moving A in the site header is unchanged.

Extra logo files with a transparent background (192, 256, 300, 512, and 1536px), light and dark edge versions. Phone home-screen tiles still use the filled square so iOS and Android do not fill in black. LinkedIn and overlays can use /images/brand-mark/transparent.png.

The favicon, phone home-screen icons (up to 512px), and the A in the corner of Worklist, PACS Admin, HL7, FHIR, and DICOM Tag Compare now use a still with the full curtain palette. Dark mode uses the black-stage version; light mode uses the white-stage version. The moving A in the site header is unchanged.

New extra stages /logo_full.html and /logo_black_full.html show the full curtain palette in one still (black, cyan, teal, green, yellow, orange, pink, magenta). /logo.html and /logo_black.html are unchanged — a live pause there still only shows a few bands because the cycle is wider than the letter. F toggles live scale on the extras; arrow keys scrub. The site header logo is unchanged.

DICOM Tag Compare's accent is now blue instead of indigo/violet — the earlier shades still read too close to Dicommunication's purple. Blue isn't used as a primary accent by any other tool or app on the site.

Diagnostics console, troubleshooting, and message inspector moved from the Worklist Simulator to the Admin Simulator. Interface-related troubleshooting scenarios now require you to perform the fix in Interface Manager after diagnosis.
